Its a trilingual project that has been tentatively titled The Tempest in English, Kal Boishakhi in Bengali and Dhumuha in Assamese. Yes it’s the much talked biopic being directed by Kalpana Lajmi and Produced by Pooja Bhatt on Musical Legend Dr.Bhupen Hazarika and tollywood superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee is playing the role of dynamic personality Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
“Bhupenda was a very romantic man and only Prosenjit can bring that alive. He also had a fiery aspect and I’m sure Prosenjit will portray that ably as well. As of now, I don’t know who will play my character, but preferably someone from western India,” said Lajmi to TOI.
Dr. Hazarika the Assamese maestro, remembered for his score in films like Rudaali, passed away in November 5, 2011.According to Lajmi the film will be a biopic seen through the prism of her relationship with Hazarika. The whole year of 2013, Lajmi was collaborating with Sunanda Shymal Mitra and they finalize the script.
Prosenjit is very happy that Lajmi has considered him for the role. “It is a huge honour. Whatever time I am getting, I am reading up on the master,” Prosenjit said. The film will be shot in West Bengal, Bangladesh, Assam and New York. In New York, Dr. Hazarika met Paul Leroy Robeson, who inspired him to write songs that celebrates life. A major portion of the film will also be shot there.
And obviously, music will play an important role in the biopic. Debajyoti Mishra is working on the background score for the film.
Rumour was speared by the end of 2013 that crossover actor Irrfan Khan denies the role of Bhupen Hazarika, but he denies that he was never offered the role. “I was never offered the role. I would love to play him onscreen. He was a great human being with a huge body of work. People like him should be remembered always. But the script should be really strong,” Irrfan said.
Anyway, undoubtedly this biopic will become a milestone for the Assamese Film Industry as well as Indian Film Industry.
