Assamese Songs are a rich heritage and a beautiful part of the South Asian cultural roots. Assamese Folk Songs are very popular and a very colorful Art form. Amongst the Assamese Traditional Folk forms, Bihu is undoubtedly the most popular and vibrant.

Bihu denotes a set of three different cultural festivals of Assam and celebrated by the Assamese people around the world. The most celebrated Festival of Assam is Rongali Bihu. Bihu is meant to be both a dance form as well as folk songs. Rongali Bihu or Bhongali Bihu depicts the celebration of the Assamese New year which happens around mid April. One of the most legendary artist, singer, songwriter, Film maker, poet from the state of Assam was the legendary Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika almost single handedly popularized Assamese Folk Songs and other Assamese traditional folk art forms to the rest of the world. Dr. Hazarika was closely associated with music and especially Assamese folk music from a very early age. Apart from singing and composing Bhupen Hazarika was an Ace Academician. He did his doctorate degree from the prestigious Columbia University in U.S. While in New York Dr. Hazarika met Paul and became close friends. His famous song “Bistirno Parore” is heavily influenced by Ol’ Man River sung by Paul Robeson. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was an active member of the IPTA which was the cultural movement by the communists in India. Many of his compositions were later on used as film scores. Bhupen Hazarika became a popular music director for both Bollywood as well as Regional Film Industries in India. This album Phuley Phuley Bharaa Baney is a compilation of Assamese Folk Songs some of which are precious compositions of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

Another excellent singer whose songs are in this composition is Kali Dasgupta. He is an excellent folk researcher who had a huge repertoire especially Assamese Folk Songs and songs sung by the tea garden workers of Assam. Songs like Chol Mini and Railgari Kaichan Sundar are rare Assamese Folk Songs that are very precious finds.
