Assamese Film “Beautiful Lives” Hits Theatre

Beautiful Lives is an Assamese film based on the 2008 bombings in Guwahati. It portrays the undying spirit of a bomb blast survivor and his struggle on a day-to-day basis

Kangkan Deka, whose critically acclaimed short film ‘Sita’ was showcased in the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival, has recently completed shooting his maiden Assamese feature film ‘Beautiful Lives’. The young filmmaker will soon commence work on the film’s editing. The film will add a new chapter to the annals of the regional film industry.

A former drilling engineer and an alumnus of ZEE Institute of Media Arts, Mumbai, Kangkan’s passion for filmmaking kept his creative fire alive. He’s particularly interested in subjects that are rooted in reality and have some connection to human lives.

He made his directorial debut with a short film titled ‘Bhagna Xapun’ (Shattered Dream), a touching story of relationship between a father and his daughter. It was his second short film ‘Sita’ that received a lot of audience interest and critical attention. This film about a nine-year-old boy who gets emotionally connected with his goat, is a fascinating, visually enticing piece of work. The film has travelled to a number of film festivals in India and abroad. The fact that it was selected to the Cannes Film Festival speaks a great deal of it’s worth and quality. Kangkan felt very happy with the way his short films have connected with the audiences. It was expected of him to helm a movie project sooner than later.

The shooting of his feature film debut ‘Beautiful Lives’ took place in an extremely collaborative environment. Kangkan has based his script on an extremely sensitive topic, and has really left nothing to chance. The film features some very well-known artistes and techncians of the state.

Various roles in the film are enacted by Pakeeza Begum, Jayanta Bhagawati, Pratibha Choudhury, Bhagawat Pritam, Baloram Das, Ashrumoni Bora, Juri Dutta, etc. Rajib Dutta, who has directed the Assamese film ‘The Face’, has worked as the chief assistant in the film. The music is scored by Bhagawat Pritam. The playback singing is being done by popular singer Zubeen Garg. The sound designing is by renowned Mumbai-based sound designer Amrit Pritam. The film’s cinematography is done by Midhun Chandran from Mumbai. Shot extensively in the locations of Mangaldoi, Kaziranga, Majuli and Guwahati, the film will surely be a treat to all lovers of serious cinema.
