7 Assam Sports Persons To Represent India in Asian Games 2018

For the first time, Assam will have seven participants for the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 19 August to 2nd September.

They are Hima Das for athletics, Shiva Thapa for boxing, Ashmita Chaliha for badminton, Pramila Daimary for archery, Kabita Devi for Fencing, Rodali Baruah for Taekwondo and Jonali Dutta for Basketball.

Hima Das

Hima Das created history by winning the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter event at the IAAF World U20 Championships held on Finland. Hima registered a time of 51.46 seconds in the final at the Ratina Stadium to become the first Indian athlete to win gold in a world championship across all age groups.

Shiva Thapa – Boxing

Shiva would be competing in his second Asian Game at Jakarta in Indonesia. He is the first and only Indian boxer with three consecutive Asian Championships medals a gold (2013), silver (2017) and a bronze (2015).

Ashmita Chaliha – Badminton

Ashmita Chaliha, the aggressive lefty from Assam, is finally entering Indian badminton’s big league. The 18-year-old has all but secured a spot in India’s Asian Games squad by winning the All India Senior Ranking Tournament in Hyderabad.

Pramila Daimary – Archery

Pramila is the only archer from Assam has been selected to participate at the Asian Games. Daimary who has a world ranking of 15 in Archery has brought laurels to the nation by winning recurve gold at the Archery Asia Cup stage 1 in Bangkok Thailand. She was also in women’s recurve team with Ridhi and Sakshi Shitole who clinched bronze in Manila 2018 Asia Cup Stage two.

Kabita Devi – Fencing

Kavita Devi, the first Indian female wrestler to enter World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), has become an inspiration to many for more reasons than one.

Rodali Baruah – Taekwondo

Tezpur girl Rodali Baruah, a black belt champion in Taekwondo is the part of the Indian women’s Taekwondo team in the 2018 Asian Games. She participated in the World Taekwondo Championships in Korea in June 2017 and won a Gold medal at the 35th National Senior Kyorugi and 8th National Senior Pumche Taekwondo Championships held at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Jonali Dutta – Basketball

Assam girl Jonali Dutta earlier was the part of Senior India camp for 2018 Commonwealth Basketball championship.
